Former Zimbabwe PM Morgan Tsvangirai.
A video clip of a dazed former Zimbabwe Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai falling into a chair after Nigerian prophet TB Joshua laid a hand on him during a prayer session, has gone viral. The opposition leader flew to Lagos Sunday to attend a church service at the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN).
The amateur clip, widely circulated on social media and other online platforms, shows President Robert Mugabe’s long-time foe falling into a chair after the prophet placed his hand on his shoulder. State-run media has had a field day speculating that Mr Tsvangirai went to Nigeria to seek divine intervention after suffering three electoral defeats at the hands of President Mugabe.
Government-leaning Herald reported that the “MDC leader Mr Morgan Tsvangirai, reeling from problems at home and in the party, appeared in Nigerian prophet TB Joshua’s SCOAN seeking spiritual answers to his crumbling deck of cards”.
The opposition has refuted reports from state media that the opposition leader was in Nigeria to lobby support against President Mugabe’s disputed July 31 re-election. The opposition leader’s spokesperson said his boss was in Nigeria on a diplomatic mission following Zimbabwe’s disputed election.
“He was in Nigeria specifically on a diplomatic and political engagement as you know what happened to the legal route,” Mr Luke Tamborinyoka, the opposition leader’s spokesman said. “This is not the first time he has gone to church,” he added.
“This just shows you that we have a God-fearing leadership. In the next few weeks, you will see a flurry of diplomatic engagements by the MDC,” the spokesman said. MDC’s attempts to challenge Zanu-PF’s victory in the courts faltered after the court turned down its request to have materials used during the polls.
Several top Zimbabwean politicians, including those from President Mugabe’s Zanu-PF, have visited TB Joshua in the past for prayers. However, last year Zanu-PF officials vowed never to allow the Nigerian to visit Zimbabwe, reportedly at Mr Tsvangirai’s invitation, after he predicted the death of Africa presidents.
Last year Zanu-PF accused TB Joshua of playing a role in the death of Malawian President Bingu wa Mutharika after the evangelist prophesised the death of a southern African leader.
