In Summary
This is an indication that people are
interested in leadership positions within the party and, as usual, they
will undergo democratic scrutiny to get strong leaders.
Dar es Salaam. The National Convention for
Construction and Reform–Mageuzi (NCCR–Mageuzi) chairman James Mbatia’s
leadership is at stake, following the emergence of one party member to
openly challenge him in the coming party elections.
Party commissioner Charles Makofila from Katavi
has declared interest in the party leadership in elections to be held
late next month.
Mr Mbatia who has led the party since 2000 is yet
to pick nomination forms for the coming elections, though party
officials say there is still room for him to do that. Mr Makofila is
among many members who have returned nomination forms to vie for
different positions in the party.
Speaking to journalists in Dar es Salam yesterday,
the party’s deputy secretary general, Mr Mosena Nyambabe, said that at
least 182 out 239 who picked nomination forms for leadership positions
at the constituency level have returned them. Some 74 contesters in the
152 slots for national party leadership positions have also returned
their forms.
“This is an indication that people are interested
in leadership positions within the party and, as usual, they will
undergo democratic scrutiny to get strong leaders,” said Nyambabe.
He said Anyimike Mwasakalaii, Sebastian Thomas and
Leticia Ghati are all contesting the vice chairperson’s position
(Mainland) while Ameir Ali is contesting the same position in Zanzibar.
Kasulu Rural MP Agripina Buyogera will contest the national women leadership while Doris Rugoli is vying for deputy chairperson.
Only Deogratius Kidsandu intends to vie for
national youth leadership while Hassan Ruhwanya and Simon Noel will vie
for vice chairperson position.
Ernest Mwasada and Iddy Rugiga have returned the nomination forms to contest the national elders’ chairperson’s position.
“We encourage party members to come forward and
vie for the leadership positions in the party as time for elections draw
nearer” added Mr Nyambabe.
