In Summary
According to Mr. Mkindi, investigations were
underway in Yemen to establish the exact cause of the death of a tycoon
who is survived by an elder wife and a daughter.
Arusha. It was another tragic loss for the
Arusha business community when businessman Salim Ally died in a road
accident in Yemen on Saturday when a speeding vehicle he was travelling
in rolled several times, killing him instantly alongside his wife
Bilhudaa Abdallah and his only son identified as Ahmed Ally.
Before meeting his death, Mr Ally together with
his wife and son, had left Yemen and were headed to the airport to
commence their flight back home. The late Ally and his family were to
arrive in Nairobi on Saturday night where they were to connect to
Arusha. Owner of several properties in the city - including the new
multi-storey Arusha Complex Centre that houses banks, shops and offices
in the heart of the city - 60-year-old Ally had joined the ranks of the
leading tycoons.
Besides the trade centre, he owned the only
tannery in the livestock-rich Arusha and Manyara regions, where nearly
70 per cent of raw hides and skins from butcheries and elsewhere end up.
The businessman, who was raised in Tanga Region before relocating here,
had his origins in Yemen and had gone there to visit his relatives.
Relatives and friends said the accident could have
occurred early in the morning as the first information about it reached
Arusha about 11 am, sending shockwaves in the town and leaving hundreds
in mourning.
Members of the business community here said the
death was a great loss. A local leader in town and who was close to the
deceased Mr Daruwesh Mkindi, said the late Ally was one of the early
local investors with a string of businesses. The late businessman,
alongside members of his family, who perished were buried on Saturday
afternoon in Yemen, only hours as per Muslim traditions.
According to Mr. Mkindi, investigations were
underway in Yemen to establish the exact cause of the death of a tycoon
who is survived by an elder wife and a daughter.
There are contradicting reports on the number of
children who were involved in the accident. Some reports said three of
his other sons survived the crash and have been hospitalized while other
relatives said his only son perished.
The elder brother of the deceased said his late brother had gone to Yemen for vacation.
The late Salim Ally, who has been involved in
several high profile cases in the last few years, becomes another top
businessman in Arusha to die tragically this year.
Only two months ago,a prominent gemstone dealer
Erasto Msuya died in a hail of bullets in Bomang’ombe Kilimanjaro
region. Mid this year another famous trader and pilot Bob Sambeki died
in a plane crash when about to land at the Arusha airport.
Early in the year, a flamboyant lawyer in Arusha
who ran a string of businesses Nyaga Mawalla died in mysterious
circumstances in Nairobi. His death was closely followed later by two
others of gemstone dealers, Henry Nyiti and Benson Mollel. The latter,
who was also a senior CCM youth wing (UVCCM) leader, was found dead in a
hotel and his death has not been fully explained.
