Korogwe. Police in Korogwe District, Tanga
Region are holding a man for allegedly possessing forged 12,300
banknotes in local currency of 10,000 denominations.
Had they been genuine legal tender, the banknotes
could be worth Sh123 million, according to the police. He was also found
in possession of 60,000 euro banknotes (about Sh120 million), also
suspected to be fake.
According to acting Tanga regional police
commander Juma Ndaki the suspect was arrested on Sunday at around 6.30pm
in a bus heading to Dar es Salaam from Arusha.
He said the police, who were manning a roadblock, decided to stop it for a routine inspection.
“After inspecting the bus, the police found
banknotes stashed in one of the luggage, which the police later found it
belonged to the suspect,” he said.
Mr Ndaki said further that the police have concluded their investigation and the suspect is expected to be arraigned soon.
He appealed to businessmen and the wananchi to be
careful by assessing banknotes that are handed to them by anyone and
reporting to the police if they suspect someone has issued with fake
currency.

On Saturday police in Kilimanjaro Region arrested
four people in possession of 100 forged banknotes in local currency of
Sh10,000 denominations, with a purported value of Sh1,000,000.
The suspects were also found in possession of a
printing machine which is believed to have been used to manufacture the
fake banknotes.
