ITV's Ufoo Saro recovering in MNH Intensive Care Unit
Independent Television/ITV journalist Ufoo Saro admitted to Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam with bullet wounds sustained in an attack at Kibamba on the outskirts of the city yesterday.
Independent Television (ITV) journalist Ufoo Saro is admitted to Muhimbili National Hospital with bullet wounds following a dispute at Kibamba in suburban Dar es Salaam yesterday in which her mother and a man identified as Antel Andrew Mushi died.

Sources associated the shooting that resulted in the tragedy to Mushi, who is believed to have had years of “close relations” with Ufoo and is said to shot her mother – Anastazia Peter Saro (58) – before taking his own life.

The ITV journalist is nursing stomach and right shoulder wounds, with an update on her condition by the time we went to press saying she was progressing well but remained admitted to the referral hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Kinondoni Regional Police Commander Camillus Wambura confirmed the tragic incident, saying the bodies of the deceased are preserved at the MNH.

“The incident occurred yesterday at around 6.30 am at the residence of Ufoo’s mother in Kibamba on the outskirts of Dar es Salaam,” the RPC said, adding: “Ufoo and Mushi are said to have gone there to attempt to reconcile following a dispute.”

However, things soon degenerated into shooting that left the mother and Mushi dead and Ufoo seriously injured.

After being transferred to MNH from Tumbi Hospital in Kibaha, Coast Region, where she was rushed after the attack, Ufoo was examined in the emergency room and then moved to the operating theatre for surgery to remove bullets lodged in her body.

Police are said to have collected at least eight cartridges at the scene of the crime, with preliminary investigations affirming that the firearm used was legally registered in the name of Mushi who, prior to his UN assignment in Sudan, worked for ITV and later TVT (now TBC TV).

IPP Executive Chairman Dr Reginald Mengi, Dar es Salaam Special Zone Head of Regional Criminal Investigation (RCO) Ahmed Msangi, Rev William Mwamalanga and Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police Commander Suleiman Kova and Chadema Public Relations Officer Tumaini Makene were among the scores of people who visited Ufoo at MNH.
Speaking to journalists at MNH, Dr Mengi expressed sincere sympathy and sent his prayers to Ufoo and her family, wishing her a quick recovery.

RCO Msangi said that he had managed to talk to Ufoo at the hospital, hinting that her condition was improving.

It is reported that Mushi arrived in Tanzania on Friday from Darfur, Sudan, where he was on United Nations mission serving as a communication engineer. Apparently, a misunderstanding arose between him and Ufoo that night and they opted for a third party to mediate, choosing Ufoo’s mother for the task.

But while at the residence of Ufoo’s mother, Mushi turned furious, retrieved a firearm he is believed to have had with him and shot the mother, who died on the spot. He is thereafter said to have shot at Ufoo several times but only two bullets are known to have hit their target.

Mushi then reportedly ignited a gas cylinder that exploded, engulfing the house in fire. Ufoo’s siblings were in the house throughout those tragic moments and only escaped the fire by making it into the ceiling and crawling along the boards before jumping outside to safety.

The sources added that it was after this failed attempt to blow up the house and kill Ufoo’s siblings and possibly destroy evidence that Mushi also shot himself.
