Lobbyists have called on Madagascar’s Government to abolish death penalty.
Death penalty is still valid in the country even
though President Andry Rajoelina signed a treaty abolishing it at the UN
General Assembly in New York last year.
About 62 are death row inmates, the Christian
Actions for the torture abolition (ACAT) said during the 11th World Day
against the Death Penalty on Thursday.
Local lobbyists also are worried about the rising cases of mob lynching in Madagascar over the recent weeks.
“We call for the respect of lives, the right to
live and the respect of the human dignity. Human rights are completely
disregarded in our country,” Ms Maria Sylvie Raharinarivonirina,
ACAT-Madagascar said.
