In Summary
The Lord mayor’s comments come after President Museveni said he is ready to work with him only if he confesses his sins.

KAMPALA
Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has said apologising to President Museveni is tantamount to betraying his electorate and the worst mistake any “determined” politician can do in the ongoing struggle for rule of law.
Mr Lukwago, in an interview with this newspaper, said there is absolutely no reason for him to “say sorry” to Mr Museveni as he demanded early this week after all the injustices he has done to him and the people of Kampala.
“Apologise for what? If that is what it takes to stop the impeachment which Museveni is steering underground, then I am ready for a by-election,” he said. “Even if he is looking to have a dialogue with me, I am not ready to work with him after all he has done.” The President, while commissioning the new Wandegeya Market early this week, said he is “ready to work with Lukwago and former FDC leader, Kizza Besigye only if they first confess their sins and repent.”
Mr Lukwago, who has experienced a tumultuous stint as mayor for two years now since the appointment of an executive director at the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), said, “Museveni is now tinkering with the tribunal report; but I remain unclenched.”
The KCCA tribunal was set up mid this year to investigate the conduct of the Lord Mayor. The President, who emphasised his title as “Ssabalwanyi” [lead fighter] while commissioning the New Taxi Park, maintained that management and decision making in the city now lies in the hands of the executive director, Ms Jennifer Musisi, and “the Mayor shall remain only ceremonial to attend gallas and call council meetings only”.
Mr Museveni also blamed the city dwellers for their own problems such as congestion, poor sanitation and bad roads “as stemming from the decision to vote opposition politicians like [his son] Lukwago who who do not deliver anything developmental, but focus only on politicking”.
