Dar es Salaam. Ninety per cent of lubricants in Arusha and Kilimanjaro regions are adulterated, posing a serious risk to vehicles and their users, according to Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS).
TBS acting director general Agnes Mneney said in Dar es Salaam yesterday that the agency conducted its survey in Kilimanjaro and Arusha regions basing on American Petroleum Institute (API) standards and found out that the lubricants were not suitable for use.
She was speaking at a meeting that brought together lubricant manufacturers and distributors.
“Having been able to witness the quality of oil in our country which has been questionable over years, you will be good witnesses that it is a challenge to monitor standards and this is what we found out in our survey,’’ she said.
Speaking at the same meeting, Starpeco company director Grantian Nshekanabo asked TBS to ensure that stern measures were taken on rogue business people in order to ensure that the products that enter the market were genuine to avoid unnecessary loss to users. “TBS officials should immediately launch an operation to crack down all substandard lubricants which are purchased at lower cost in order to stop further damages to vehicles and car owners should be sensitised to shun cheap products which in turn result in big losses,’’ said Mr Nshekanabo.

During the seminar yesterday TBS officials explained to stakeholders dealing with the lubricants about the standards that are acceptable.
The lubricants involved are those with specification of engine oil minimum performance, multipurpose automotive gear lubricants and motor vehicle brake fluids.
Fake lubricants have adverse effects as they damage the engines of the vehicle and also affect the industrial operations.
