The suspects were arrested at Kiluvya in Kinondoni, following a massive operation to net anti-social elements in the area, said Mr Kova.

Dar es Salaam. Police in the city have arrested a professor with the University of Dar es Salaam over the shooting and wounding Mr Fadhili Mkachiko at Salasala in Kinondoni District.
Dar es Salaam Special Police Zone Commissioner Suleiman Kova told reporters that Mr Mkachiko as of yesterday still fighting for his life at Mwananyamala Hospital.
He said the shooting victim informed the police that at around 4pm on Monday this week, he was with his friends and that they were building a house owned by one Khadija, which is still under construction, when the UDSM don arrived and ordered them to stop working on the plot because it belonged to him.
He added that after some minutes of a fierce exchange of words, the professor pulled a pistol from his waist and shot Mr Mkachiko in the abdomen causing severe pain injuries.
Mr Kova said the victim had tried to explain to the don in vain that the plot didn’t belong to him and that it was Khadija’s.
According to Mr Kova, after lengthy arguments, Mr Mkachiko and his colleagues at the site decided to continue with their construction work, not expecting the professor would turn murderous.
He said the arrest of the don was an outcome of a manhunt that was swiftly launched by law enforcers, adding that the police recovered from the suspect the gun as well as seven rounds of ammunition.
The regional police boss alleged that upon investigations, his boys established that the plot in which the construction was taking place didn’t even belong to the gun-toting professor.
“We, therefore, want to establish why the academician decided to commit the senseless act,” said the police chief.
According to Mr Kova, the professor works with UDSM’s Plant Research Department.
Meanwhile, seven other people have been netted by the police in the city for possessing firearms and police uniforms illegally and committing various crimes while posing as law enforcers.
The suspects were arrested at Kiluvya in Kinondoni, following a massive operation to net anti-social elements in the area, said Mr Kova.

He added that the suspects were found in possession of two shotguns with four rounds of ammunition, two police walkie-talkies and two police uniforms bearing the insignia of sergeant major.
“After being tipped off by law abiding citizens, we swung into action and got them,” he said.
He said investigations were ongoing and added that the suspects would appear in court soon.
In another development, the police have arrested another city residents for allegedly masquerading as an officer with the Tanzania Intelligence Service (TIS) and committing crime in the city.
The regional police boss said the suspect was found in possession of two firearms and fake documents bearing State House stamp as well as an identity card from the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF).
According to the police, the TIS imposter has been conning people by purporting he is an officer from the intelligence service.
He said the police in the city moved to carry out a special operation, following complaints from members of the public that there were people who are intimidating them by purporting to be security officers.
Last week, the police arrested a police imposter who pretended to be a traffic police officer at Tabata, Kinondoni District.
