Norway : PhD Candidate in Marine Geology and Geophysic at the Department of Geology

UiT The Arctic University of Norway , Faculty of Science and Technology, has a PhD position vacant for applicants who wish to obtain the degree of Philosophie Doctor (PhD). The position is attached to the Department of Geology and the research group in “Polar Marine Geology and Geophysics”. The appointment is for a period of four years.


The PhD position is for a fixed term, with the objective of completion of research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to a PhD programme is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position. The PhD Candidate shall participate in the faculty’s organized research training, and the PhD project shall be completed during the period of employment. The position’s field of research/research project

The position is connected to the research group inPolar Marine Geology and Geophysics. The candidate will work on the PhD project ”Ice sheet dynamics and deglaciation of the Barents Sea – Svalbard area”. The project is part of the activities of the Research School in “Arctic Marine Geology and Geophysics” (AMGG)", which is organized by UiT The Arctic University of Norway in collaboration with The Norwegian Polar Institute, The University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) and The Geological Survey of Norway (NGU). It is also connected to the national Norwegian Research School in Climate Dynamics (ResClim).

The PhD project have the following two objectives: 1) Reconstruct the former extent, dynamics and chronology of former ice sheets in the Barents Sea – Svalbard area. 2) Improve our understanding of glacial erosional and depositional processes and products. The research fellow will use seismo-acoustic data and sediment cores from selected areas of the Barents Sea. The project will involve participation in marine geological/geophysical cruises and might also include field work on Svalbard.


Qualification requirements

The successful applicant must fulfil the requirements for admission to the faculty’s PhD programme, cf. Regulation for the degree of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) at UiT The Arctic University of Norway . In addition, he/she must be able to document proficiency in English equivalent to Norwegian Higher Education Entrance Qualification, refer to the website about PhD regulations at UiT.

The successful candidate should have a background in glacial geology and/or equivalent relevant experience in marine geology/geophysics, geomorphology or sedimentology at Master level. Experience with seismic interpretation, ArcGis and/or digital imaging programmes would be advantageous. The applicant must present a short description outlining his/hers interest in and academic basis for working on the announced PhD project. Emphasis shall also be attached to personal suitability.
