Korogwe. Police in Korogwe District, Tanga Region are holding a man for allegedly possessing forged 12,300 banknotes in local currency of 10,000 denominations.
Had they been genuine legal tender, the banknotes could be worth Sh123 million, according to the police. He was also found in possession of 60,000 euro banknotes (about Sh120 million), also suspected to be fake.
According to acting Tanga regional police commander Juma Ndaki the suspect was arrested on Sunday at around 6.30pm in a bus heading to Dar es Salaam from Arusha.
He said the police, who were manning a roadblock, decided to stop it for a routine inspection.
“After inspecting the bus, the police found banknotes stashed in one of the luggage, which the police later found it belonged to the suspect,” he said.
Mr Ndaki said further that the police have concluded their investigation and the suspect is expected to be arraigned soon.
He appealed to businessmen and the wananchi to be careful by assessing banknotes that are handed to them by anyone and reporting to the police if they suspect someone has issued with fake currency.
