Qatar to buy Amnesty International

DOHA: Qatar has reportedly purchased the human rights organisation Amnesty International, less than a day after it published a damning report into the country’s construction sector as work begins on stadiums for the 2022 World Cup.

While financial details of the deal have not been revealed, experts have suggested that move is an economically shrewd one by the gas-rich Gulf state.

“It would have cost Qatar an absolute fortune to meet the various demands laid out in Amnesty’s recent report,” said Hamish McDervitt of the Gulf Analyst Group. “Buying the organisation outright is a simple, one-stop solution that swiftly and effectively deals with all of these problems.”

Rumours have circulated that once the deal is complete, Qatar plans to move Amnesty International’s headquarters to Knightsbridge in London and transform it into a “luxury mall and residential complex”
