Gas explorations in the districts of
Kilosa-Kilombero in Morogoro Region have indicated potential presence of
very large structural traps according to research conducted by Swala
Oil and Gas Tanzania Limited.
Swala Company Chief Executive Officer, Dr David Ridge made the announcement recently in Dar es Salaam when giving a briefing update of the 2D seismic programme underway in Kilosa-Kilombero.
“The results from the Kidatu survey have already shown the potential presence of very large structural traps,” said the CEO noting that these findings are “…encouraging results and the find underscores our team’s geological understanding of the area.”
Dr Ridge said that a total of 143km of 2D seismic were acquired over the Kidatu basin whereby the initial results based on preliminary processed data indicate the presence of large-scale structures along the edges of the basin together with a major intra-basin high identified on dip and strike lines.
He noted that the structure may be as large as 30 to 60 square kilometres of the area surveyed which in his words is ‘a good indicator as to the future of the Tanzanian economy and its people.’
He also announced competition of activities over the Kidatu basin where ‘preliminary interpretations of the results are positive.’
These results follow those observed from the programme in the Kilosa basin to the north that were also positive as announced by Swala on 18 September 18 and now the seismic survey has now commenced over the Kilombero basin, south of the Kidatu basin for another three weeks.
“Upon conclusion of the Kilombero survey, the seismic crew will mobilise to Pangani in the north of Tanzania to acquire up to 200km of 2D seismic in the two potential basins identified in 2012,” he reported.
“…whilst additional processing and interpretation of the recorded data is still needed, the positive results to date give us growing confidence in our continued exploration activities,” said the CEO.
Swala Oil and Gas Tanzania Limited have a 50 percent interests in the licence and is the operator, while 50 percent interests are set aside for locals.
