Dar es Salaam. FastJet has introduced a new
route as it seeks to boost its presence and get an increased markets
share in Tanzania’s air transport. The company is currently selling
tickets for its new Dar es Salaam-Mbeya route.
“Flights to the Songwe Airport in Mbeya on
FastJet’s signature Airbus A319 aircraft will commence on 1 November
2013 and initially operate three times a week,” the firm’s statement, a
copy of which was sent to The Citizen, said yesterday.
The firm anticipates that demand for its services
on the new route will expand rapidly and the company will increase
frequencies.
The newly-developed Songwe Airport serves not only
the city of Mbeya, but also the densely populated cross-border regions
of northern Zambia and Malawi.
According to firm’s chief executive officer Ed Winter, the decision is a response to requests from passengers.
“We have been inundated with requests from
passengers for FastJet to operate a service on this route, and are
extremely pleased to be launching ticket sales today,” he said.
Regeneration of its infrastructure at Songwe airport is slated to be completed in October.
FastJet will then commence its flights to the destination.
Firm’s chief commercial officer Richard Bodin said
the launch of Mbeya flights demonstrates that the company is committed
to delivering on its promise to reach the country’s airports.
Fares can be obtained at as low as $20 (Sh32,000) excluding fees and taxes.
This comes as the airline is about to launch its
first international route – slated for September 27, between Dar es
Salaam and Johannesburg.
